1870-1890 - The 1870s saw the rapid expansion of hospitals, which were primarily religious and ethnic institutions. They were used in serving the poor as warmth, a home, food, and basic nursing. James Ware's "dumbbell" design was named after its narrow airshaft running through the middle of the building, yet it was mainly named foe front and rear tenement connected by a long hall. Each dumbbell were six stories high and had about 84 rooms. It housed about 300 people.
1910- The invention of steel futhered the production of the rail roads, also with started the first skyscapper. The city grew up instead of out anymore.
1920- The new houses had new inventions and enjoyed electricity, central heating, and inside running water, and toilets. 1930- This was the great depression hoovervilles popped up in the city. The depression hit families hard making some like in town of other poor people in shacks that were not well made.
